What is an “October surprise” in a campaign?
The “October surprise” is a hostile attack that is revealed shortly before an election to influence its outcome. The negative attack is purposely timed to shock voters at the last minute and give the candidate who is the target of the attack little or no time to respond.
Even if the negative statements are false or out of context, the candidate being attacked is often unable to adequately defend themself because time to reverse the damage is limited. By recognizing an October surprise, you can counter the effects of this unethical tactic.
If you see a negative attack revealed at the end of a campaign, be suspicious of the information and call in to question those who are launching the attack.
